The BSL service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
It is free to use the BSL service.
We'll try to connect you as quickly as possible, but sometimes you may need to wait.
This service uses live video displayed in your computer's web browser, or the browser you use on your phone or tablet. You won't need to register, or download an app (though if you prefer, a free app is available.)
How does the BSL service work?
The BSL service works by connecting you with a BSL interpreter through a video link.
First, the interpreter will call the Support Line on your behalf.
Next, once you're connected, the BSL interpreter will interpret for you over live video, allowing you to have your conversation with a specialist team member.
You will be able to see the interpreter, and the interpreter will be able to see you.
What to expect when you use the BSL service
What will happen when I connect?
Clicking on the connect button will take you to an external webpage hosted by our trusted partner,Interpreters Live!.
Before connecting, make sure you're somewhere you feel comfortable being seen. Your interpreter will be able to see you and anything visible through your camera.
You will be invited to fill in your name and email but this is completely optional.
When you're ready to begin your call, click the blue 'Connect' button.
This will begin a video chat with the next available interpreter, though you may need to wait a little while. The video will appear in your browser – you won't need to download anything.
Delays in connection
While we expect you to be able to connect to an interpreter immediately, it is normal for there to be a wait in reaching a specialist Support Line operator, especially at peak times.
If there is a delay, you may need to wait with your interpreter for a short time. The interpreter will not chat with you or start a conversation until your call with the Support Line begins.
What will happen once I've connected?
Once you are connected by video, the interpreter will call the 24/7 Support Line.
When the call begins, they will explain to the specialist team member that they are interpreting for you.
The interpreter will interpret the conversation between you and the Support Line throughout the call.
If you call between 8pm and midnight, the interpreter will let you know that you may indicate a preference for a male or female specialist team member . We will do our best to meet your preference, but we cannot guarantee that your preferred operator will be available.
Who will my BSL interpreter be?
We work with a trusted team of interpreters through Interpreters Live!, who are trained to provide a confidential interpreting service.
Your interpreter may be a woman or a man.
Confidentiality
Because of the nature of the video link and interpretation, the interpreter will be able to see you, any surroundings captured by your webcam, and hear any audio from your call, so remember to go somewhere you're comfortable being seen before you begin your call.
Calls are not recorded, and take place in a secure space. Interpreters Live! do not retain any of your personal information.
Your call is completely confidential, and we won't share what you tell us unless we believe that you or someone else, including a child, could be at immediate risk of significant harm, and us sharing this information could help keep you or them safe.
